STARS Program
Three Hits on a Side Earns a Star
One of our primary objectives for the Youth Volleyball League is to develop the volleyball skills of our participants. In addition to form and technique, we would like them to strive for three hits on a side.
While teams will win more games at a youth level by simply hitting the ball back over the net, this does not lay the appropriate groundwork for them to be a long-term successful volleyball player.
We have found that it is helpful to have an incentive for teams and players to attempt three hits. This is where the STAR program comes in.
During the matches, players and teams earn STARs for each time they successfully execute three touches on a side. For the 3rd and 4th graders, the second touch can be a catch.
At the time the STAR is earned, the team, coaches and parents should celebrate – a STAR cheer may be in order.
At the conclusion of each game, we record all the STARs earned at the scoring table.
Each week, we will record the STARs on the web site and in the newsletter.
At the last practice, the team with the most STARs will have a pizza party. We will also have individual awards for the top STAR winners in each age division.
